José Mª Zamanillo Sainz de la Maza got the BSc in 1988 and received the PhD degree in 1996, both from the University of Cantabria (Spain). He joined the Microwave and RF research group of the University of Cantabria team in 1990. From 1990 to 2002, he was associate professor at the Department of Electronics first, and Department of Communications Engineering both of the University of Cantabria. Since 2003, he is lecturer at the Department of Communications Engineering of the University of Cantabria. He has been manager of the Laredo branch of the UC summer courses in the period 2004-2008, of the UC Image and Sound Classroom in the period 2008-2012 and is director of the Santander and Camargo branches of Summer Courses from UC from 2012 to the present. Furthermore, in 2022 he has been appointed director of the Santa Cruz de Bezana branch of the UC Summer Courses.

His first line of research consisted of the development of hardware and software tools for the characterization and electrical modeling of active microwave devices, GaAs MESFET's and HEMT's, including the automatic extraction of small and large signal equivalent circuits that can be integrated into commercial simulators. . Currently, his lines of research are oriented in four well-differentiated directions:

  • Modeling of microwave transistors (GaAs & GaN MESFET, HEMT, PHEMT, etc.), including optical-microwave interaction effects, design and construction of communication systems.
  • Design of passive waveguide devices at microwave frequencies.
  • Development of techniques and algorithms for the digital processing of acoustic signals from side-scan sonars of unmanned underwater vehicles, including the recognition of submerged man-made objects.
  • Characterization and measurement of metamaterials devices that could be used in guided propagation and antennas.

He is co-author of more than 180 contributions in international journals and conferences, in addition to two books and several book chapters. He has managed more than 80 final year projects and a doctoral thesis. The application of the results of the investigations and collaborations carried out with the different research groups with which he has collaborated throughout his research career have been transferred to both the civil company and the military field. The development of these projects has always been associated with the presence of different national (INDRA, Marina Española, FAGOR, IKUSI, TTI, etc.) and international (Daimler, Dassault-electronique, OMMIC, ALENIA, SIEMENS, etc.) companies that have been the last responsible for their construction and on occasion for their exploitation. He has been a reviewer for various IEEE journals, as well as a member of scientific committees for several international conferences and journals.
